100th Anniversary of Butrint rediscovery, celebrating Italian-Albanian archaeological tradition

Butrint continues to be the great protagonist of Italy Week. After the contemporary ballet spectacle in the amphitheater of the Archaeological Park, a conference titled “Butrint One Hundred: A Current Tradition of Italo-Albanian Archaeology” was held in honor of the renowned archaeologist Luigi Maria Ugolini, on the occasion of the centenary of the mission that led to the rediscovery of Butrint.

The conference took place in the premises of the Tirana Archaeological Museum, attended by archaeologists, researchers, publishers, representatives of the Italian Cultural Institute, and others.

For years, archaeological expeditions have been organized in Albania by a joint Italian-Albanian group. At this conference, Luigi M. Ugolini’s book “Butrint, the Myth of Aeneas-Excavations” was presented, translated into Albanian.

The conference was organized by the Italian Cultural Institute in collaboration with the Italian Embassy in Tirana, the Department of Historical Cultural Heritage, the Archaeology Section at the University of Bologna, the Ministry of Economy, Culture, and Innovation, as well as the Tirana Archaeological Museum.

The Italian Cultural Institute expressed on this occasion that they take advantage of the opportunity to celebrate the rediscovery of Butrint and the beginning of archaeological cooperation between Italy and Albania, on this centenary of the first journey of Italian archaeologist Luigi Maria Ugolini in Albania.
