Vaçe Zela was an icon of the Albanian music. She kicked off her career at a young age, and in 1962 she grabbed the first prize of the Song Festival for the first time with the song “First Child” showing that a music idol was emerging at that time. Her repertoire was very rich, including dozens of popular songs, light music, cantatas, ballads, etc. She also made a significant contribution to film music, interpreting many songs that became part of movie soundtracks.

12 time-winner of the Song Festival, Vaçe Zela became well-known during the communist period and was honored with titles such as “Distinguished Artist” in 1973 and “People’s Artist” in 1977. She last performed on the stage of the RTSH Festival in 1980 and permanently withdrew from the stage in 1992. 

The highest accolade she could receive was the order “Nation’s Honor” on December 24, 2002, for her rare contribution as an outstanding artist, extraordinary popularity, and masterful interpretation of light and folk music, as well as for the rich legacy she created in the Albanian school of musical interpretation.

In honor of the singer, the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, Youth, and Sports declared the year 2009 as “Vaçe Zela Year.” Also, a street in Tirana has been named in her honor.
