19th Death Anniversary of President Rugova; Leader of the Powerful Movement for Freedom and Independence of Kosovo

On January 21, 2006, Kosovo’s historic leader and President, Dr. Ibrahim Rugova, passed away. He was the pivotal figure who led the powerful democratic movement for Kosovo’s freedom and independence, leaving behind an enduring legacy that continues to guide Kosovo’s path toward becoming a Euro-Atlantic state.

President Rugova was a champion of national and democratic values, a symbol of civic resistance, a peace and brotherhood advocate, and the visionary architect of Kosovo’s independence. He was also a respected interlocutor with the international community in Europe and around the world.

As we mark the 19th anniversary of his passing, we remember his life and achievements.

Dr. Ibrahim Rugova brought international attention to the severe human rights situation in Kosovo, advocating for the dignity of all people and raising the voice of an entire nation. Influenced by notable figures such as the Albanian bishop Imzot Pjetër Bogdani, Gandhi, Martin L. King, Václav Havel, Pope John Paul II, and Mother Teresa (Gonxhe Bojaxhiu), Rugova dedicated his life to serving his people and country. His legacy is one of culture, peace, and statesmanship.

Born on December 2, 1944, in Cercë, Istog, Rugova’s early life was marked by tragedy when, on January 10, 1945, the Yugoslav communists executed his father, Uka, and his grandfather, Rrustë Rugova, both of whom were known fighters against the Chetnik forces during World War II.

Rugova completed his elementary education in Istog and high school in Peja in 1967. He then studied Albanian Language and Literature at the Faculty of Philosophy in Prishtina. During the 1976-77 academic year, he furthered his studies in Paris at the École Pratique des Hautes Études under Professor Roland Barthes, focusing on literary theory. He earned his doctorate in literature from the University of Prishtina in 1984.

In 1996, Dr. Ibrahim Rugova was elected a corresponding member of the Academy of Arts and Sciences of Kosovo. He began his career as editor of the student newspaper “Bota e re” and the scientific journal “Dituria” (1971-72) published in Prishtina. He also worked for the “Fjala” magazine. For nearly two decades, Rugova contributed to the Albanological Institute as a researcher in literature and as the editor-in-chief of the journal “Gjurmime albanologjike.”

In 1988, Rugova was elected president of the Kosovo Writers’ Association, which became the core of the Albanian movement against Serbian and Yugoslav communist rule in Kosovo.

As a prominent intellectual, Rugova was elected president of the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) on December 23, 1989, the first political party in Kosovo to openly challenge the communist regime. Under his leadership, the LDK rapidly became the dominant political force, uniting the majority of Kosovo’s population.

In collaboration with other political forces and the Kosovo Assembly, Rugova and the LDK established the legal framework for Kosovo’s independence. The Declaration of Independence (July 2, 1990), the declaration of Kosovo as a republic, and the adoption of its constitution (September 7, 1990) were key milestones leading to Kosovo’s first multi-party elections for the Assembly on May 24, 1992.

Dr. Ibrahim Rugova was elected president of the Republic of Kosovo and re-elected in March 1998.

Under his leadership, the LDK won the majority of votes in the first internationally-sponsored local elections in post-war Kosovo in October 2000, as well as in the first national elections in 2001 and the second local elections in 2002. The LDK also won the 2004 national elections.

Dr. Ibrahim Rugova was elected president of Kosovo in March 2002 and re-elected in 2004.

He passed away on January 21, 2006, in Prishtina, and was buried in “Bregu i Diellit,” with the highest honors from the people of Kosovo.

On the first anniversary of his death, January 21, 2007, President Fatmir Sejdiu posthumously awarded President Ibrahim Rugova the “Hero of Kosovo” medal, the highest honor in the country, recognizing him as one of the key figures who contributed to the freedom and independence of Kosovo.
