Besim Zekthi was born on 5 February 1936 in Tirana. From an early age, he became a dancer and later a master of Albanian folk dance. Over his career, he gained fame as a soloist in the Ensemble of Folk Songs and Dances. Notably, he excelled in the dances “The Dance of the Eagles” and “Albania Celebrates Today.” In addition, he helped Albania win the Golden Wreath at the Dijon Festival in France in 1970.

Albanian folk culture represents the nation’s identity. Therefore, folk dance remains central to this heritage, and Zekthi embodied its essence. Through decades of work, he preserved the spirit and creativity of Albanian dance. Moreover, experts recognize his achievements through awards, titles, and honors. Even at 71, he remains tall, elegant, and full of life.

His art reflects both personality and passion. Consequently, his dances continue to communicate emotion and cultural meaning. In 2008, he planned a new project showcasing his choreography, which he named “Albania gave me wings.” This project highlights the roots of his folk work while also celebrating classics like “The Dance of the Eagles” and “Albania Celebrates Today,” which brought him international recognition.

Zekthi emphasized that Albanian dances, whether from the south, center, or north, carry distinct meaning and expression. Indeed, performances communicate through movement, emotion, and expression, even when words fail. Furthermore, folk dances reflect national identity, history, and spirit. He believes culture cannot be forgotten; every nation needs its traditions, songs, dances, instruments, and costumes. Ultimately, folk dances and songs remain living monuments of Albania’s cultural history.

Besim Zekthi, a legend of the Albanian stage, performed over 200 dances as a soloist, creating hundreds of unforgettable artistic figures.

He also choreographed some of Albania’s most iconic dances, including “The Wedding of Rugova” (Dasma e Rugovës), “For the Flag, for the Homeland” (Për flamur, për atdhe), and “Dance with Mirdita Motifs” (Valle me motive të Mirditës). Zekthi was the virtuoso who earned Albania the Golden Wreath at the Dijon Festival in France. With his energy, temperament, and mastery, he captivated audiences across the Balkans, Europe, Asia, and Africa.

Besim Zekthi received dozens of awards and titles throughout his career. He was also honored with Albania’s highest distinction, “Honor of the Nation”.
