Ahmet Zogu became the country’s president on December 31, 1925.

The General Directorate of Archives recalls that on January 21 of that year, a date that entered the annals of history, the form of the first Albanian republic was decided. After the suppression of the June Revolution, the Constitutional Assembly convened to declare Albania a Parliamentary Republic, with Ahmet Zogu elected as the head of state.

The new form of government for the country was legitimized through the adoption of the Statute of the Albanian Republic by the Constitutional Assembly in March 1925. The Statute sanctioned the consolidation of independence and the implementation of constitutional democratic principles.

Likewise, democratic principles and freedoms, such as the separation of powers and human freedoms and rights, were legislated in the Statute. A major achievement of the time was the adoption of the Penal Code. The term of the president of the Republic was seven years. This republican form of government lasted until September 1928.

Then, he declared himself King Zog I, becoming the first and only monarch of the Albanian Kingdom. His reign continued until the Italian invasion in 1939.
