The National Folklore Festival of Gjirokastra returns in 2023

The Minister of Culture, Elva Margariti, has shared on social networks the news that the Gjirokastra Folk Festival will return in 2023.

“The year 2023 comes with good news. The National Folklore Festival of Gjirokastra returns in June”, writes Minister Margariti.

The parade of motifs, rhythms, colors, songs, dances, rituals will unfold in the parade that will take place in the stone city. The minister writes that the preparations for this festival have already kicked off.

The first National Folklore Festival of Gjirokastra took place in 1968, in the stone fortress of Gjirokastra. Since then, the festival has been held every five years.

The 70s can also be considered the peak of participation in this festival, where there were more than 1 thousand selected participants.

The Gjirokastra Festival was conceived in the form of a folklore competition, where until the festival of 1988, prizes were given to the best groups, while in its last editions the prizes would be awarded to the bearers and interpreters of folklore.
