Balla and Svelça sign the agreement to further ease border crossing between Albania and Kosova

Citizens of Albania and Kosova will pass through the border point of Morina with accelerated procedures throughout the 9 months of the year and on holiday weekends. Previously, this period of border crossing facilities during only the 4 months in summer season.

The revised protocol was signed in Tirana by the Albanian Minister of the Interior, Taulant Balla, and the Kosovan counterpart, Xhelal Sveçla.

“I am very happy that today in this historic place, I am together with my friend, the Minister of Interior of Kosova, Sveçla to jointly write another page in this new chapter of excellent relations between our two countries. Based on the joint will and commitment between the Governments of our two countries and between the two Prime Ministers to follow the policies to facilitate the movement of citizens at the Border Crossing Points between Albania and Kosova towards the complete easing of controls in implementation of the agreement between the Government of the Republic of Kosova and the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Albania for the establishment of joint border crossing points between the Republic of Kosova and the Republic of Albania for the performance of joint border control activities, signed on December 29, 2018. Today we are signing a new protocol, replacing the existing one for the implementation of joint border control at the Morina, Kukës border crossing point, signed on June 20, 2022,” said Balla.

He emphasized that with the signing of this new protocol, both countries will enable the easing of border crossing procedures, the border checks at the joint crossing point of Morina, Kukës for the entire period, May 1 to September 30 and November 1 to February 28, which makes 9 months in total per year, in contrast to the former protocol that provided for 4 months.

The Minister of Internal Affairs of Kosova, Xhelal Sveçla stated both countries are working so that citizens do not feel any restrictions at the border points.

During 2023, there were 1,445,204 Albanian citizens and 4,430,161 foreign citizens registered entering through the said border crossing point.
