Albania-Greece issue, Hasani: A strong commitment from both sides to seek a resolution

Today, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Igli Hasani, emphasized his strong commitment to finding a solution to the deadlock with Greece.

During a press conference, Hasani was asked about negotiations between the official Tirana and Athens, “Regarding the successor or new caretaker of the Himara Municipality, in reference to the Prime Minister’s decision to remove Jorgo Gora as a step toward resolving the impasse with Greece,” cited Hasani. He hopes that all outstanding issues would be resolved in 2024, enabling Albania to enter the New Year with a clear trajectory toward becoming a future member of the European Union.

In terms of the maritime issue with Greece, Hasani mentioned that the Albanian government is awaiting authorization from the President of the Republic to proceed with the process.

In response to the media’s inquiry regarding the current status of the issue, Hasani stated, “There is an utmost commitment, yet positions remain clear. Greece is an important neighbor of Albania, an EU member state, and a neighbor with distinctive contributions and merits. Hence, we are fully and completely committed to fostering strong ties, both in our engagement with official Athens and in our relations with Brussels.”

“I maintain regular communication with the President of the Republic. I am eagerly awaiting his response to ascertain if further information is required. I understand there was written communication exchanged a few months ago. I have explicitly conveyed my readiness to provide additional information or ideas to assist in his decision-making process. Our aim is to obtain the mandate necessary to initiate negotiations clearly and decisively,” stated Foreign Minister Igli Hasani.

Both Albania and Greece have declared their intention to resolve the issue concerning the sea between them at The Hague Court.
