In the Balkan region, Serbia ranks first for the highest ratio of women to men, since in 2021 there were 105.4 women for 100 men, followed by Kosovo with 103.7 women for 100 men (data for Kosovo are from 2020 ), Montenegro with 102.3 women for 100 men, Albania with 100.7 women for 100 men, while Macedonia has a gender ratio in favor of men with 99.8 women for 100 men.

In Albania, the ratio of women to 100 men marked a deterioration during 2021 as a result of the high level of immigration among young people. In 2020, there were 100.3 women for 100 men in our country, while in 2021 this ratio worsened, reaching 100.7 women for 100 men.

According to internal data from INSTAT, in 2021, women make up 50.3% of the total population. The natural increase during 2021 is lower for women than for men, respectively -514 and -2,782.

The net migration of women marks the value of -12,713 women who emigrated more than returned in 2021.

The net migration of men is also negative, -20,140 men emigrated more than returned. The negative net migration of men and women has contributed to the overall population decline.

The gender ratio by age group shows that there is a predominance of the male gender up to the age group of 35-39 years. The median age for men in 2021 is 37.3 years, while for women it is 39.1 years.

The higher median age among women is explained by their higher life expectancy. In 2021, life expectancy at birth is estimated to be 74.4 years for men and 78.7 years for women. This means that women live 4.3 years longer.
