Slovenia: EU should send out a clear signal for membership of the Western Balkans

The President of the Slovenian Parliamentary Assembly, Igor Zorcic had a meeting with colleagues from Western Balkans highlighting that it is crucial that the European Union should send out a strong and clear signal to the countries of the Western Balkans to achieve enlargement and integration into community institutions,

“The process not only seems to have stopped, but has gone in the wrong direction, because many of these parliaments no longer see the EU as the future they aspire to,” Zorcic said.

“As the next president of the EU, Slovenia aims to maintain and revive not only the debate, but also the enlargement process with the Western Balkans,” he added.

An EU-Western Balkans summit on the same issue is scheduled for next week (October 6th) in Brdo pri Kranj, which is among the Slovenian presidency’s priorities as it seeks to reach agreement on negotiating frameworks for Albania and North Macedonia and continue the negotiation process with Serbia and Montenegro.

Slovenian President Borut Pahor and Foreign Minister Anze Logar have also sent messages of support and encouragement for enlargement and integration, considering it vital to the well-being of the region’s citizens.
