Pashk Gjeçi, the renowned translator of Dante’s Divine Comedy, passed away on January 20, 2010. Born in Shkodër on September 7, 1918, Gjeçi was educated in Italian, Ancient Greek, and Latin. He studied in Rome, earning a doctorate in literature in 1942. After returning to Albania, he was arrested in 1947 for alleged anti-government activities. Following his release, he dedicated himself to translating literary classics, including Divine Comedy, Odyssey, Faust, and Hamlet. His translation of Divine Comedy was internationally acclaimed, earning him recognition from the Italian association Dante Alighieri and the title “Ordine della Stella della Solidarietà Italiana” in 2004.
