Today, the Center for Arbëresh Studies and Publications marked the 199th anniversary of the birth of Gavril Dara (The Younger), a prominent figure in Arbëresh culture and literature.

Born on January 8, 1826, in Palac Adriani, Sicily, Dara hailed from a distinguished Arbëresh family. He received his early education at the Arbëresh Seminary in Palermo and later obtained a doctorate in law.

In 1858, he launched the literary magazine Përtëritja e jetës (Palingenesi) and, between 1871 and 1874, he edited the newspaper La Riforma in Rome. His notable work includes the 1300-verse poem Ana Maria, written in 1864.

Dara’s deep passion for poetry and folklore led him to create enduring works, including Kënga e sprapsme e Balës, published in 1906. He also contributed to fields such as linguistics, philosophy, and archaeology.

Gavril Dara passed away on November 15, 1885, leaving a lasting legacy in Albanian literature and culture.
