On January 6, 1920, Aleksandër Prosi, known to the Albanian public as Sandër Prosi, was born in Shkodër.

His mother was from Shkodra, while his father was of Vlach origin, originally from Voskopoja and later moving to Tirana.

His first theatrical performance was in “William Tell.” He won a state scholarship to study dentistry in Austria, though he did not complete his studies. In 1947, he participated in a competition at the People’s Theatre and won, marking the start of his extensive and diverse artistic career.

Over his career, Sandër Prosi created more than 85 roles in 75 works by renowned authors, including Andon Zako Çajupi, Kolë Jakova, Besim Levonja, Loni Papa, Ismail Kadare, Teodor Laço, Ruzhdi Pulaha, Dritëro Agolli, Dhimitër Xhuvani, as well as international writers such as Shakespeare, Schiller, Chekhov, Karagjal, Gorky, and Brecht.

He appeared in around 30 films, delivering performances that have become iconic in Albanian cinema. Sandër Prosi left behind a rare gallery of characters, a masterful school of acting, and became a reference point for new generations of actors. To him, no role was too big or too small. He excelled at portraying a wide range of characters, from statesmen to common workers, professors to warriors.

For his immense contribution to the arts, he was awarded the prestigious title of “Artist of the People,” along with several national prizes, orders, and medals. On the 25th anniversary of his passing, Sandër Prosi was posthumously awarded the “Honor of the Nation” by the President of Albania. On February 24, 2017, he was also awarded the “Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu” Order.

Sandër Prosi passed away on March 25, 1985, while still working on the film “Bitter Spring.”
