Today marks what would have been the 92nd birthday of Robert Shvarc, a brilliant translator of Jewish descent, born in Sarajevo on December 10, 1932.

Shvarc distinguished himself through his translations of literature from German into Albanian and vice versa. He is particularly recognized for his contributions to German literature translations and his rendition of Leon Uris’s Exodus.

Shvarc translated some of the world’s greatest literary works into Albanian, including the novels of Erich Maria Remarque, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Lion Feuchtwanger, Apitz, B. Traven, and Gabriel García Márquez.

The President of the Republic awarded him the title Mjeshtër i Madh (Grand Master). This honor followed shortly after he received the title Honorary Citizen of Tirana on the occasion of his 70th birthday.

Over the years, Shvarc’s name has become a symbol of the German language in Albania. A notable moment came in 1995, when the German Embassy in Tirana honored him with the Cross of German Merit. He was the first figure in Albanian cultural history to receive this distinction in the field of translation.

Robert Shvarc passed away on April 25, 2003, after a prolonged battle with heart disease.
