On October 30, 2017, director Mihallaq Luarasi passed away at the age of 88.

He was born on September 16, 1929, in Korçë, Albania. He completed his secondary education at the “Jordan Misja” Artistic Lyceum in Tirana and pursued higher studies at the Academy of Theater and Film in Budapest, Hungary.

The trio of directors—Mihallaq Luarasi, Kujtim Spahivogli, and Pirro Mani—elevated Albanian stage art for two decades, leaving a significant mark from 1957 to 1973.

Luarasi made his directorial debut with Friedrich Schiller’s tragedy “Intrigue and Love” in 1957 at the People’s Theatre. This production remained in the repertoire for seven years and was performed over 300 times. The drama “Njollat e murrme” (“The Stains of Sorrow”) would be the last play Luarasi directed before enduring a long period of persecution under the communist regime.

Mihallaq Luarasi is regarded as a pivotal figure in the history of Albanian theater, particularly for his condemnation during the dictatorship, as his bold artistic choices cost him eight years of freedom. Following the criticism prompted by “Njollat e murrme,” his role as director of the 11th Song Festival at RTSH led to an eight-year prison sentence. Luarasi returned to artistic activity after the 1990s.
