National History Museum commemorates Sevasti Qiriazi-Dako

Sevasti Qiriazi-Dako, the well-known Albanian patriotic educator, was born on February 24, 1871 in Manastir/Bitola (present-day North Macedonia) and passed away on August 30, 1949 in Tirana. She was one of the Albanian patriotic women and the initiator of the organization of national education for the women. During her stay in Istanbul, Naim Frashëri, the Albanian National Poet and a central figure of Albanian National Renaissance of the 19-th century, was the one who gave Sevasti Qiriazi-Dako the opportunity to study at the Robert College in Istanbul. He completed the college in Istanbul. She was the first Albanian woman to study at this American institution, which she completed in June 1891.

Upon returning to Albania, she participated in the establishment of the girls’ school in Korça in 1891. This school is also the beginning of a school on a secular basis. After the WWI, this school was also known by the name of the Qiriazi family. She also participated in the Congress of Manastir, where she was mainly engaged with the preparation of textbooks for the schools.

Sevasti Qiriazi-Dako published a grammar for primary schools (Manastir 1912) and edited a series of history texts. Together with her husband, the journalist and the writer Kristo Dako (1878-1941) and with her younger sister Parashqevi Qiriazi, she went to Romania and from there immigrated to the United States, where she collaborated with the fortnightly magazine “Ylli i Mëngjesit” /The Morning Star/.

The Qiriazi sisters were the first teachers and educators of the girls’ school that was opened in 1891 in Korça. Many names emerged from this school, well- known women who contributed, not only in the field of education, but also became known fighters of the national issue.

Sevasti Qiriazi Participated in the Congress of Elbasan and worked in the commission for the review of school textbooks set up by the “Progress” society. She wrote “Elementary grammar for primary schools”.

On the other hand, she cooperated with patriots and with Ismail Qemali too on the national issue. When she was the head of the party “Albanian National Party” in the US, she defended the rights of Albanians in many international forums. Devoting herself to national progress, she provided assistance in the field of education and social emancipation Albanian woman.
