Kristo Dako, remarkable renaissance activist, minister and teacher

With a remarkable patriotic activity, as a renaissance of the Albanian language and education, Kristo Dako ranks and occupies a place of honor among the most prominent names of the most active patriots in Europe and in the world of his time, such as: Faik Konica, Fan Noli, Luigj Gurakuqi, etc.
He has been a member and leader of several important patriotic associations and clubs of the time such as: “Shpresa” Association, “Dituria”, “Djalëria Shqiptare”, “Bashkimi” Club, “Vëllazëria” Club, “Dielli i Shqipërisë” Club.
He was born in the city of Korça, in 1876. He completed his first lessons in Korça and then, after his family emigrated to Romania, Bucharest, he continued and finished his lessons in high school. He completed his higher university studies in Bucharest, Romania, for mathematics. Later, after emigrating to the United States, he completed his university studies in philosophy.
Kristo Dako has been a participant in the Paris Peace Conference. He was noted for his contribution to the protection of the rights of Albanians and fought with dedication against the partition of Albania.
He has met twice face to face with US President Willson and has lobbied more than anyone on the Albanian issue. In these meetings, he directly spoke in defense of Albania’s borders, being against the predatory intentions of neighboring countries. He sought the support of the most powerful state of that time, America and President Willson, in defense of the national and territorial interests of Albania.
He is known as a prominent publicist and has published in the most prestigious magazines of the country of that time such as: “Morning Star”, “Albania”, “Sun”. Kristo Dako has published articles in the foreign press of the time as: “The Orient” , The Times, etc.
He has also published the works: “Who are the Albanians”, “Albania, the key to the Middle East”, “Notes from the Life and work of N.M. “, Zog I, King of the Albanians ”, the textbook“ The first lessons of elementary Geometry ”etc.
He is known as one of the founders, administrator and teacher of the Female Institute of Girls “Kirias” (Qiriazi), in the city of Korça and later in Tirana, Kodër-Kamëz. He was the husband and closest collaborator of Sevasti Qiriazi (Dakos) and Parashqevi Qiriazi, in their noble activity of education and emancipation of Albanian women.
In 1910 he was appointed director of the Elbasan Normal. He was also a deputy and Minister of Education in the government of Hasan Prishtina, for a short time. Dako retired from politics and devoted himself to education, with the “Kyriaz” institute.
He passed away on December 16, 1941 in Tirana.
