Von der Leyen: EU Ready to Accelerate Western Balkans Integration

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen affirmed the EU’s readiness to support the swift integration of Western Balkan countries into the European Union.

Speaking at the conclusion of the EU-Western Balkans Summit in Brussels, Von der Leyen highlighted Albania and Montenegro’s significant progress over the past year, describing it as “extraordinary.”

“Montenegro has shown remarkable progress, and Albania has also advanced by opening its neighborhood chapter. Enlargement is working, and as we approach the 30th anniversary of the 1994 enlargement—the EU’s largest to date—it’s clear that the process is delivering results.

However, future EU member states must fully grasp the importance and responsibility tied to progress and integration. The Commission is committed to a rigorous, merit-based review of all processes and stands ready to support partners who aim to accelerate their journey toward membership,” Von der Leyen stated.

She also announced a €300 million fund to support reforms in the Western Balkans, with the initial focus on integrating these countries into the EU’s single market.

“Reforms and investments are critical. The Western Balkan countries must implement ambitious reforms, which we will support with €300 million in funding. The first step is integrating them into the EU’s single market, making border crossings more seamless and efficient.

We will also enhance access to financial capital at reduced costs. Albania and Montenegro will join these initiatives next year, with other countries to follow. The agreements reached during the Berlin Process, particularly in e-commerce and the removal of barriers to human capital, are essential for this progress,” Von der Leyen was quoted as saying.
