The EU–Western Balkans Summit is taking place this Wednesday, December 18, in Brussels, with a focus on deepening partnerships and advancing the region’s gradual integration into EU policies.

This is the first summit organized by the new President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, who initiated his mandate with an informal dinner for Western Balkans leaders just three days ago.

The summit follows a significant milestone for Albania, which opened Chapter VI of its EU membership negotiations yesterday—a development widely praised by international partners.

Divided into two sessions, the summit will prioritize political and economic cooperation between the EU and the Western Balkans. Discussions will cover the EU’s Growth Plan for the region, enhanced political and security commitments, regional collaboration, good neighborly relations, the ongoing war in Ukraine, and addressing Russia’s hybrid influence in the region.
