North Macedonia; Ahmeti: Constitutional Court’s Decision on Public Debate Over Ohrid Agreement Revision is Absurd

Ali Ahmeti, leader of the Democratic Union for Integration in North Macedonia (BDI), strongly condemned the Constitutional Court’s decision to unilaterally call for a public debate on revising the Ohrid Peace Agreement, describing the move as “an absurd and unacceptable act“.
Ahmeti stressed that the Ohrid Agreement is a historic document that ended a war and laid the foundation for a fair and equal society. It is a peace agreement that cannot be questioned or renegotiated by anyone, especially not by an institution without the competence or legitimacy to do so.
The Law on Languages, part of the Ohrid Agreement, guarantees equal rights for all citizens and represents a significant achievement for multi-ethnic coexistence in North Macedonia.
According to Ahmeti, the decision to open a debate on the agreement is an attempt to undermine the peace process and create uncertainty for the future.
“Ohrid Agreement is inviolable, and any effort to undermine it will face strong opposition from the Albanian community and BDI,” Ahmeti emphasized.
He called on all political parties, civil society, and citizens to unite in defending this historic achievement and ensuring that the benefits of peace and stability are not put at risk.
“Ohrid Peace Agreement is not, and will not be, subject to renegotiation,” he concluded.
BDI remains committed to protecting the rights of Albanians and building a sustainable, just future for all citizens of North Macedonia.
