Ali Ahmeti Sends Letter to Tirana and High Officials in Kosova, EU, and the U.S.: The Ohrid Agreement is at Risk!

Ali Ahmeti, leader of the Democratic Union for Integration in North Macedonia, has sent a letter to regional leaders and high-ranking officials in EU and the United States, expressing deep concern over recent political and constitutional developments in North Macedonia. The BDI warns that these changes “endanger the achievements of the Ohrid Agreement and the principles of equality and stability in the country.”
In his letter, Ahmeti addressed Albanian President and Prime Minister Bajram Begaj and Edi Rama, Kosova’s President and Prime Minister Vjosa Osmani and Albin Kurti, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron, and U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken. He highlighted his serious concerns about political and constitutional shifts that threaten the foundations of the Ohrid Agreement (2001) and the principles of equality and stability in the multi-ethnic state.
Ahmeti identified three recent decisions as significant threats to peace and stability: the plan to abolish the Law on Languages, the prohibition on identifying ethnic affiliation in state institutions, and the formation of a government majority.
“These three major blows to the foundations of the Ohrid Agreement pose a serious threat to peace, stability, interethnic harmony, and multi-ethnic democracy in North Macedonia. These issues are not merely internal political matters; they carry severe repercussions for the region and its stability. Such interventions threaten to erase key elements of peace and equality, potentially reverting to conditions prior to 2001, which led to crisis and conflict. I urge united and decisive action to protect the achievements of the Ohrid Agreement and the guaranteed rights of the Albanian people,” the letter emphasizes.
