Rohde Recalls Scholz’s Stance: Kosova-Serbia Normalization Includes Mutual Recognition

German Ambassador to Kosova, Jorn Rohde, has reiterated German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s stance regarding the normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia, emphasizing that mutual recognition is essential for both countries’ EU membership aspirations.

Rohde shared Chancellor Scholz’s statement on his social media account, X, where Scholz had previously asserted during his visit to Kosovo and Serbia that it is unimaginable for two countries that do not recognize each other to become members of the European Union.

In his post, Rohde highlighted that Scholz’s position remains unchanged and stressed the importance of fully implementing the agreements reached in Ohrid and Brussels by both parties, as soon as possible, according to Kosova Press.

“Just a reminder: Read Chancellor Scholz’s clear stance during his June 2022 visit to Kosovo and Serbia regarding normalization, which includes mutual recognition. This still stands. The way forward is this: Full implementation of the Ohrid and Brussels agreements by both parties as soon as possible,” stated Rohde.

This reminder from Rohde comes shortly after the US Ambassador to Serbia, Christopher Hill, commented that Serbia will not be required to de jure recognize Kosova’s independence to join the European Union. This statement underscores the complex and multifaceted nature of the ongoing dialogue and the differing perspectives on the prerequisites for EU accession.

Rohde’s reiteration of Scholz’s stance highlights Germany’s firm position on the necessity of mutual recognition for Kosova and Serbia to advance their European integration processes. The call for the swift and full implementation of existing agreements remains a critical component of this normalization effort.

As diplomatic efforts continue, the international community watches closely to see how Kosova and Serbia will navigate these complex issues and what steps they will take towards normalization and potential EU membership.
