Tirana and Prishtina, collaborating on cross-border efforts to control small and light weapons

The UNDP offices in Tirana and Pristina, in collaboration with the National Commissions for Small Arms and Light Weapons, jointly presented their respective projects for “Integrated institutional approach and increased cross-border cooperation in the field of Small Arms and Light Arms control.”

Both projects address challenges related to Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) control, following the Western Balkans Roadmap for a Sustainable Solution to the Illicit Possession, Misuse, and Trafficking of SALW/Firearms and Ammunition by 2024.

The roadmap envisions the Western Balkans as a safe region and a security exporter. It aims to establish comprehensive and sustainable mechanisms fully harmonized with European Union and other international standards to identify, prevent, prosecute, and control the illegal possession, misuse, and trafficking of firearms, ammunition, and explosives.

The initiatives presented are based on the specific objectives of the Roadmap and align with Sustainable Development Goal 16, which aims to promote just, peaceful, and inclusive societies by combating organized crime and illicit financial flows.
