“Begaj: Kosovo, a positive factor for security in our region”

President Bajram Begaj congratulated Kosovo today on the 16th anniversary of Independence, emphasizing that “today is a special day to celebrate. February 17 marks the culmination of the dreams of the Albanian people, of Kosovo for freedom and independence”.
“The Independence of the Republic of Kosovo opened a new page in the history of the Albanian nation. Albanians will always be grateful to our Euro-Atlantic friends who helped and supported us in realizing our centuries-old aspirations. NATO’s intervention in 1999 marked a decisive turning point for the Albanian people and the citizens of Kosovo,” emphasized Begaj.
The Head of State expressed gratitude to “those who stood by the Albanian nation and chose action, not indifference towards Kosovo. This day is a very good occasion to honor and appreciate all those who contributed to Kosovo’s independence, from its visionary and peaceful President, Rugova, to the heroes of the KLA, especially the Jashari family, which has become a symbol of the struggle for liberation.”
“The birth of the newest state in Europe was a challenge, but in less than two decades, Kosovo has made extraordinary strides in building institutions and a democratic and multiethnic society. Through efforts, achievements, and many difficulties, Kosovo now has a perspective of development and prosperity on the horizon. Today, Kosovo is a success story in the Balkans in respecting human rights, with its vibrant culture and youthful energy of a forward-looking people,” emphasized Begaj.
President Begaj stated that Kosovo, an independent state, is a positive, peace-building, and important factor for security in our region.
“We are two states but one nation with one language and one culture. We must exploit this golden opportunity to show that we are capable of building modern states based on democratic governance principles. Relations and cooperation between our two states are naturally strategic, with indispensable importance and a unique role in stability, security, sustainable development, and our common Euro-Atlantic perspective and that of the entire region,” emphasized Begaj.
President Begaj expressed that “cooperation should be emphasized in the economic aspect and in improving the daily lives of our citizens. The economies of our countries should be complementary as they leverage comparative advantages to be more competitive in the region and beyond. Of course, in the context of a deteriorating security situation globally, cooperation in the field of security should take priority.”
“The terrorist attack against the Kosovo Police in Banjskë a few months ago shows how fragile peace and security are in the region. Cooperation and closer coordination with our strategic allies, the USA and the EU, are essential. Equally important is the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia. Facilitated by the EU and strongly supported by the United States, the continuation of the dialogue is the only path to peace, normalization of relations, as well as Kosovo’s membership in regional and international organizations,” emphasized Begaj.
Begaj said, “I want to assure you that Albania will continue its firm commitment to support Kosovo. We will continue to work for continuous international recognition and jointly promote peace and stability in the region, as well as support the aspirations of the Albanian people for a richer future.”
