Lajcak: Time to fully refocus on the next steps of the dialogue

The EU envoy for the dialogue between Kosova and Serbia, Miroslav Lajcak, spoke about the expansion of the European Union (EU) with the countries of the Western Balkans (WB) and the dialogue process between Kosova and Serbia in Brussels.

Through a post on social network, Lajcak writes that it is time to fully focus on the dialogue process for the normalization of relations.

“This year’s (Davos) forum centered around the theme of rebuilding trust. During the traditional Western Balkans Diplomacy Dialogue, we discussed expectations and priorities in the region and the European Union regarding enlargement. Serving as a co-moderator, I shared my observation that while there is notable enthusiasm from the Eastern partners, it is met with skepticism from the Western Balkans.

The current momentum for enlargement is real, but as we are well aware, in politics, a momentum never lasts forever. Therefore, the key question now is whether we will be able to transform this momentum into a new quality of enlargement or whether it will be lost altogether,” he wrote.

The Slovak diplomat comments that the perspective of the Western Balkans’ membership in the big European family is real, but added that a momentum never lasts forever, referring especially to the fulfillment of the EU’s expectations for countries aspiring to European integration.

“The current momentum for expansion is real, but as we well know, in politics, a momentum never lasts forever. Therefore, the main question now is whether we will be able to transform this momentum into a new quality of expansion or whether it will be lost altogether”, Lajcak added, among other things.

Lajcak puts emphasis on the fact that it is time for dialogue.
