The Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, remains steadfast in defending the Italy-Albania accord for refugees, highlighting the European spirit demonstrated by the country in accepting it.

“It is an innovative agreement that exemplifies the European spirit of cooperation. This is not a Guantanamo, nor is it a deportation scenario: Albania is not Nazi Germany. The only right being violated is that of human traffickers,” stated Prime Minister Meloni, contradicting comparisons suggesting that the camp in Shengjin would resemble Guantanamo, the notorious detention center for prisoners established after the September 11 terrorist attacks in the USA.

While addressing the Italian senators and in the face of criticism from the opposition, Mrs. Meloni reiterated certain details of the agreement. The pact with the Albanian government envisages the settlement of 36 thousand immigrants from Africa in Shengjin until their asylum requests are processed.

“This agreement is transparent, and we will soon present a draft law for ratification to the parliament, outlining the rules regarding expenses,” she elaborated.

Prime Minister Meloni also remarked, “Italy was a pioneer with this agreement,” highlighting that it had garnered significant interest from other EU states.

She emphasized that “Italian jurisdiction” will be ensured throughout the duration in which immigrants are brought to Albania.
