“The death of Karel Schwarzenberg leaves a deep void in European politics and society. Albanians will always remember him for his contribution to the recognition of Kosova. Heartfelt condolences to the Czech people and President Petr Pavel,” writes Begaj.
Karel Schwarzenberg was one of the main figures of the Czech Republic after the regime change. He passed away at the age of 85 on Sunday, November 12.
He was one of the main supporters of Kosova’s independence even before it was officially declared by Prishtina in February 2008. He was serving as foreign minister when the Czech Republic recognized it in May 2008.
Schwarzenberg served twice as foreign minister of the Czech Republic between 2007 and 2013 and was seen in Kosova as a friend of the country.
In January 2008, one month before Kosova was declared independent, Schwarzenberg had said that “at the right time, the Czech Republic will support Kosova’s Declaration of Independence”.
