The US ambassador to Kosova, Jeffrey Hovenier, has strongly condemned the violent attacks on the Kosova Police, where one officer was killed and one other was injured.

The US ambassador says that responsibility must be met with justice.

“The USA strongly condemns the orchestrated, violent attacks against the Kosova Police on this morning of September 24. We are closely monitoring the situation and condemn these violent acts against the legitimate authorities of the Republic of Kosova. The perpetrators must and will be held accountable and brought to justice. They must stop their attacks immediately,” said Hovenier.

Hovenier states that he appreciates the continuous coordination between the Kosova Police, the NATO mission in Kosova, KFOR and the European Union Rule of Law Mission, EULEX.

“I fully support the statement of my US colleagues. The perpetrators of this murderous attack against Kosova’s law enforcement officers must be brought to justice. The rule of law must be established in Kosova,” repeated German Ambassador Jorn Rohde.

The authorities in Kosova have blamed Serbia for committing the murder.

Tensions in the north of Kosova have been high since May, when the residents of municipalities with a Serbian majority in the north did not accept the new Albanian mayors, coming from the elections that they themselves boycotted. The situation has, on occasion, escalated into violence.

On the other hand, the international community has asked Kosova to coordinate on the next steps and work towards improving the situation.

Gunshots were recorded in the north of Kosova in the early hours of this Sunday morning (September 24), where a police officer was killed as a result.
