North Macedonia, Ali Ahmeti: DUI ministers resign from the government if the opposition votes for constitutional changes

The chairman of the Democratic Union for Integration, Ali Ahmeti has announced that the ministers of his party resign from government positions, but he conditions it the entry into force of these resignations with the voting of the constitutional amendments by the largest North-Macedonian opposition party, VMRO-DPMNE.
Ahmeti made the announcement on Facebook, addressing the Macedonian Prime Minister Dimitar Kovacevski for the reasons for this unexpected decision.
The leader of the second largest party in the government coalition, Ali Ahmeti writes that North Macedonia is in a critical phase of the European future and that the decision, according to him, requires responsibility and political, national and state sacrifices, while DUI is committed to the definition that Euro-Atlantic integration remains the greatest interest of all the citizens of the country.
The Albanian party estimates that the constitutional changes are the only way forward to the European integration of North Macedonia and to reach the necessary number of two-thirds of the votes in the parliament, the opposition VMRO must also vote.
Although, a few weeks ago, the VMRO said to vote on the revision of the constitution conditional with the condition that DUI leaves the government, now it insists on early elections.
The country’s parliament is expected to begin a plenary session on the announced changes on August 18.
North Macedonia has time until November to pass these changes, which deal with including the Bulgarian minority in the constitution, in order to continue the second phase of EU accession negotiations.
