EU ready for punitive measures against Kosovo and Serbia/ Borell: Situation between the two countries should be de-escalated

If there is no progress in the expansion of the situation in the north of Kosovo, the EU will take punitive measures against Prishtina and Belgrade. This is what the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borell, declared a day ago (June 26), after the meeting of foreign ministers in Luxembourg, DW reports.
Borell announced that if Serbia and Kosovo do not make progress in the two main demands of the EU, the punitive measures against the two countries will be political and financial.
The European Union has clear requirements: Kosovo requires the suspension of police operations in the municipal buildings in the north and the four mayors must temporarily perform their duties outside the municipal offices. Meanwhile, Serbia is required to ensure that the protesters leave the municipal buildings simultaneously with the departure of the Kosovo police.
Borell expressed the need to hold elections in the four municipalities in the north, as according to him, the municipal offices cannot be protected forever by NATO forces.
“We agree that elections should be held. We cannot have mayors in offices that are protected by NATO forces forever, being elected with 2 or 3 percent of the voters. This is not a sustainable solution. So if is not stable, it must be replaced by other solutions and the other solution can only come from new elections and this is what both parties must do. Elections with the participation of Serbs, otherwise it will be the same situation as today” , Borrell said.
