EU calls for peaceful elections in the north of Kosovo

On April 23, citizens in the four municipalities of the north of Kosovo, inhabited by a majority of Serbs, will go to the polling stations to elect four new mayors and two new members of the municipal assemblies. The European Union has an appeal to the parties in the north of Kosovo to refrain and hold peaceful elections.
The elections for new mayors will be held in North Mitrovica, Leposaviq, Zveçan and Zubin Potok. Meanwhile, in Leposaviq and Zveçan, there will be voting for the new composition of the municipal assemblies.
The EU has also once again expressed its disappointment for the boycott of the elections by the main party of the Serbs in Kosovo, Serbian List, which has the support of official Belgrade, and has said that it is necessary for the Serbs to return to the institutions of Kosovo.
“Since the Serbs left the institutions in the north of Kosovo in November 2022, the EU, together with our partners, has engaged with both sides to reduce tensions and for the Kosovo Serbs to fulfill their obligation from the dialogue and returned to the institutions, while for Kosovo, to enable this return to be realized. So far, little progress has been made on this point. It is imperative that we return to the situation in which Kosovo Serbs actively participate in local government, police and judiciary in northern Kosovo. We need both sides to play their part in this regard”, said the EU spokesperson, Peter Stano.
