Dialogue Kosovo-Serbia, USA: Kurti and Vucic should be constructive regarding the European proposal

The United States announced that it supports the European Union’s proposal for the normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia and called on the leaders of both countries to be constructive.
“We expect both leaders to approach the meeting with the constructive spirit necessary to move forward,” the State Department’s response to VOA said on February 24.
According to reports, the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, and the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, will meet in Brussels on Monday, February 27. A plan supported by the European Union and the USA, known as the Franco-German proposal for future relations between Kosovo and Serbia, has been placed before them. The State Department told VOA that it is important that Serbia and Kosovo use the talks to express their commitment to a peaceful future for the entire region.
“Serbia and Kosovo must reach a comprehensive agreement through dialogue. We believe that normalized relations between Kosovo and Serbia should ultimately aim at mutual recognition. Progress in dialogue will open the door to European integration and it is essential for security and stability in the Western Balkans,” the State Department’s written response states.
International mediators presented the plan to authorities in both countries in September 2022. In that document, which was publicly supported by the US, Germany and France, there is no clear mention of mutual recognition or Kosovo’s membership in the United Nations. Meanwhile, the EU proposal has been accepted in principle by the Prime Minister of Kosovo and the President of Serbia.
