“Solar for Kosovo”, the EU provides 80 million euros for the solar energy project

Kosovo will finally start building a solar plant, a project that will use energy from the sun for central heating. The project, now named “Solar for Kosovo – Solar Central Heating”, was very necessary for the energy needs of the country.
The loan and grant agreement for the “Solar for Kosovo – Central Heating” project was signed. The project as a whole has a value of 80 million euros, which is why it is considered important for the capital and for air protection.
The Minister of Finance, Labor and Transfers, Hekuran Murati, has said that there are two grant agreements and that this project will save energy for the largest extension of central heating.
“This project is the first in the region, which largely uses solar energy. The project as a whole is valued at over 80 million euros. The project as such is unique, it represents one of the largest capacities for solar heating, which is saved to be used for central heating even for 38 thousand citizens who did not have access to central heating before,” said Murati.
The head of the EU Office, Tomas Szunyog, said that Kosovo has great potential for energy and it is important to have other alternatives for thermal energy. The deputy ambassador of Germany in Kosovo, Matthias Conrad emphasized that this is very good news and a step forward.
The project is worth over 80 million euros and includes two grants from the German Government and the EU in the amount of 31.6 and 21.5 million euros respectively, to be implemented through the German Development Bank (KfW). While the rest of the project is financed by a soft loan from the EBRD in the amount of 23.2 million.
