USA welcomes the Kosovo-Serbia agreement on license plates

The United States welcomed the agreement reached between Kosovo and Serbia “on measures to avoid further escalation of tensions”.
In a statement by the spokesman of the US Department of State Ned Price, they praise the agreement of the two countries “to focus fully and urgently on the normalization of relations under the auspices of the dialogue facilitated by the European Union”, which the United States evaluates as “the best way to advance the European future of Serbia and Kosovo”.
The statement welcomes “the decision of the parties to put the interests of all their citizens at the forefront of decision-making and to take steps to improve the daily lives of their citizens. Both sides took a giant step forward today, with the EU’s facilitation, towards guaranteeing peace and stability in the entire region.”
“The United States welcomes the constructive negotiations and encourages further progress toward normalization of relations,” reads the statement.
The adviser of the State Department, Derek Chollet, said that he had a good conversation with the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti.
“I thanked him for the constructive engagement in finding a way forward to reduce tensions and the commitment to work urgently for the normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia in the EU-facilitated dialogue, which the US strongly supports,” he writes on Twitter.
Kosovo and Serbia reached an agreement on Wednesday evening regarding the issue of license plates of cars used by Serbian citizens in the north of Kosovo, which had increased concerns about inciting new tensions in the area.
The European Union said that after this agreement it is time to focus fully on the European proposal for the normalization of relations between them, an initiative which became known as the Franco-German proposal, supported by the United States.
