The US hopes for a Kosova-Serbia agreement in the coming days

A spokesperson for the US State Department told VOA that the United States hopes that Kosova and Serbia “reach an agreement in the coming days with the support of the European Union Special Representative”.
The EU has invited the Prime Minister of Kosova, Albin Kurti, and the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, for a meeting in Brussels in an effort to find a solution to the situation in northern Kosova, which European officials have described as the most dangerous since 2013. European Union spokesman Peter Stano did not say when the meeting might take place but expressed hope that it should happen very soon. Sunday afternoon or Monday morning have been mentioned as possible meeting times.
Mr. Stano said that the aim is to find a European solution. “This is exactly the goal, to have them in Brussels to discuss with them the way out. We hope that they will be able to come very soon, so that we can deal with the issues, as Josep Borrell has said, before the 21st and not after,” said Mr. Stano. “We are actively supporting these efforts,” said the spokesperson of the US State Department.
Currently, European officials are holding intensive discussions with both sides to overcome the situation in northern Kosovo, where Serbian representatives abandoned the country’s institutions, after the Kosovo authorities began in November to gradually implement the decision to convert car license plates issued by Serbia. The decision of the Kosovo government was taken, despite calls from the United States and the EU for a ten-month postponement.
According to the government’s decision, from November 21, there will be fines for those who have not converted their license plates begins, while the representatives of the Serbs in the north have warned of resistance in the event of fines obligation. This has raised the concern of Western officials who say the situation is on the brink of another crisis and a way out must be found through a structural approach.
