Begaj welcomes delegation from Presheva: Cooperation of the political factor brought a more accurate registration of Albanians living in Serbia

President Bajram Begaj hosted a delegation from the Presheva Valley, where the focus of the talks were the rights of Albanians in Serbia, their registration during the census in Serbia, but also political relations in the region as a whole.

Begaj expressed his satisfaction that a large number of Albanians from Presheva, Bujanoc and Medvejeva have become part of the population census in Serbia, while he appreciated the seriousness and maturity of the Albanian political parties of these municipalities cooperated bringing a more accurate and fair census of Albanians who live in this region of Serbia.

“This serves the status of Albanians in these municipalities and factors them even more in defense of their rights and freedoms in Serbia, which must be in full compliance with international standards and best European practices,” Begaj said.

Regarding the discussion of regional cooperation, Begaj assured the delegation that the Albanians of the Presheva Valley would always find a strong support of the Albanian institutions for the full realization of their rights.

The population census is particularly important for members of ethnic communities, as it serves as a framework for determining the scope of rights they have. According to the estimates of the international community, about 60,000 members of the Albanian national minority live in Serbia, mainly in the municipalities of Preshevo, Bujanovac and Medveja in the south of Serbia.
