On February 6, 2014, Albania lost Vaçe Zela, one of its most cherished and iconic singers. Born on April 7, 1939, in Lushnjë, she displayed an extraordinary musical talent from an early age. Her vast and timeless repertoire continues to captivate audiences today.

A trailblazer in Albanian music, Zela was a prominent figure in national festivals, making her debut at the very first Song Festival on Radio and later on Radiotelevision. She won the inaugural edition in 1962 with Fëmija i Parë (“The First Child”) and went on to claim an unprecedented eleven more first prizes, cementing her legacy as a dominant force in Albanian music.

She gracefully retired from the stage in 1992, leaving behind a remarkable body of work that spans folk, light music, cantatas, and ballads—each a testament to her unparalleled artistry.

In recognition of her immense contributions, Vaçe Zela was awarded the prestigious title Honor of the Nation, with the commendation: “For her exceptional artistry, extraordinary popularity, masterful interpretation of both folk and light music, and for the invaluable cultural legacy she has left in the Albanian school of musical interpretation.”
