International Transfer of Personal Data: Albania and Kosovo Reach Mutual Recognition

The Office of the Commissioner for the Right to Information and Protection of Personal Data has approved a list of safe countries for the international transfer of personal data to European Union member states.

The list includes countries that comply with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), member states of the European Economic Area (EEA) which also adhere to GDPR under the EEA3 agreement, as well as parties to the Council of Europe’s Convention 108, among others.

Furthermore, the regulation reflects the mutual recognition between Albania and Kosovo regarding the transfer of personal data, acknowledging both as countries with adequate data protection standards.

This mutual recognition between Albania and Kosovo offers significant advantages for data controllers in both countries, enabling faster data exchanges and enhancing the efficiency of international cooperation.

It also supports the further development of the digital market and services in the region, ensuring a higher level of personal data protection and safeguarding individuals’ rights.
