Mehmet Ali Pasha Vrioni was born on May 13, 1842. He was an Albanian patriot, politician, and diplomat. As a result of his leadership, he became vice president of the League of Prizren.

He was the father of Prime Minister Ilias Bey Vrioni. Therefore, his family continued to play an important role in Albanian history. He was also the grandfather of translator Jusuf Vrioni.

In 1878, he was named vice president of the League of Prizren. Because of his experience, he also led the League’s branch in Berat. He became a member of the Society of Istanbul and the Janina Committee. In addition, he joined the Central Committee for the Defense of Albanian Rights. Consequently, he represented Berat in the Ottoman Parliament.

His main goal was to solve the Albanian national question. As a result, he dedicated himself to the League of Prizren. The League opened its Assembly on June 10, 1878. It aimed to present Albanian demands to the Great Powers. This happened before the Berlin Congress on June 13, 1878.

Abdyl Bey Frashëri became the League’s president. Consequently, Mehmet Ali Pasha Vrioni was chosen as vice president.

After the Assembly, he and Abdyl Bey Frashëri led the Albanian delegation to the Berlin Congress. There, they demanded the unification of four Albanian vilayets. They also asked for autonomy within the Ottoman Empire. As a result, they gained some international attention. They pushed for political and military readiness. They also tried to secure foreign support for the Albanian cause.

On March 30, 1879, they left Preveza again. They traveled to the main capitals of Europe. Their goal was to strengthen international support for Albania. As a result of these efforts, the Albanian cause gained more visibility.

Mehmet Ali Pasha Vrioni died in 1895. His legacy lived on through his work and his family.
