One year ago, Albania lost a literary giant. Ismail Kadare, the most renowned Albanian writer, passed away at the age of 88.

He raised the profile of Albanian literature across the globe. His works earned admiration both inside and outside Albania.

Ismail Kadare was born on January 28, 1936, in the Palorto neighborhood of Gjirokastër. He stayed in his hometown until he finished high school. In 1954, he prepared his first poetry collection, Boyhood Inspirations, for publication.

Then, he moved to Tirana to study Language and Literature. He graduated as a teacher.

Between 1958 and 1960, Kadare studied at the “Maxim Gorky” Institute in Moscow. However, Albania’s break with the Soviet Union forced him to return home. He soon began working in journalism.

In 1963, he published his breakthrough novel  The General of the Dead Army. The book gained international attention.

Over time, Kadare wrote many works that explored both national and universal themes. His 1970 novel  The Castle  highlighted the Albanians’ fight for freedom. A similar theme appears in  The Wedding Processions Are Frozen, which reflects the 1981 protests in Kosovo.

Another notable novel is  Chronicle in Stone (1970), which captured life in wartime Gjirokastër. In 1981, he released  The Palace of Dreams, a symbolic and widely discussed novel.

In the fall of 1990, Kadare left for France. Later, he returned to Albania after the start of the democratic transition.

Kadare received numerous honors. The President of Albania awarded him the title “Honor of the Nation.” In 1996, he became a lifetime associate member of the French Academy of Moral and Political Sciences.

In October 2023, French President Emmanuel Macron honored Kadare with the title of Grand Officer in the Legion of Honour during a visit to Tirana.

Kadare’s work earned several international awards, including the Man Booker Prize and the Prince of Asturias Award. He stood among literary greats like Gabriel García Márquez, Günter Grass, and Milan Kundera.

So far, his works have been translated into about 45 languages.
