Western Balkans Leaders Meet in Skopje to Advance EU Growth Plan

Leaders from the Western Balkans and senior EU officials are currently meeting in Skopje, North Macedonia. The meeting focuses on the Growth Plan for the region. Specifically, the agenda includes discussions on economic cooperation, reforms, and integration into the Common Regional Market.

During the event, EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos stated that this process is not just for governments, but rather for the people.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Edi Rama emphasized Albania’s strong commitment to regional cooperation. According to him, the country is now closer than ever to EU membership.

“We are proud,” Rama told the media. “So far, we have fulfilled all the required tasks and will continue working according to the timeline. Indeed, the Growth Plan is clear. Both sides must complete their obligations. Ultimately, this process is part of what is known as gradual integration. And importantly, it is already happening. Albania is making strong progress.”

Notably, this summit takes place on the first day of Denmark’s EU Presidency.

Furthermore, the main focus of the talks is to evaluate the Growth Plan. The leaders also discussed new initiatives and ways to deepen economic cooperation. These topics were explored in two discussion panels.

In particular, the first panel addressed the Growth Plan’s progress, next steps, and communication strategies. It also included discussions on tourism, consumer protection, and the proposed “Common Market Highway” under Pillar 1. All of these efforts, ultimately, aim to strengthen ties with the Common Regional Market.
