The National Historical Museum commemorated today Jani Vreto, one of the most prominent figures of the Albanian National Renaissance. Vreto passed away on 9 July 1900 in Athens.

As a writer and publisher, he made a significant contribution to the rise of national consciousness and the spread of Albanian culture. From 1843 to 1847, he attended the renowned “Zosimea” Gymnasium in Ioannina.

In the early 1870s, Vreto became closely connected with the leaders of the national movement, including Hasan Tahsini, Sami Frashëri, Pashko Vasa, and Ferid Pashë Vlora. Moreover, he maintained correspondence with Albanian intellectuals in Egypt such as Thimi Mitko, Spiro Dine, and Thimi Thoma Kreji. He also exchanged letters with distinguished cultural figures in Italy, including Dhimitër Kamarda and Jeronim De Rada.

In autumn 1877, Vreto became a founding member of the Central Committee for the Defense of Albanian National Rights.

Later, in May 1878, he published Apologjia in Greek. In this work, he explored the origins of Albanians, the Albanian language, inhabited territories, and their historical rights.

On 12 October 1879, he participated in the founding of the “Society for the Publication of Albanian Writings.” The organization focused its efforts on publishing books in Albanian—particularly school textbooks—and supporting the opening of Albanian-language schools.

After returning to Istanbul, Vreto contributed to the publication of the periodical Drita, which was later renamed Dituria. The publication circulated in Constantinople from August 1884 to July 1885.

Today’s commemoration highlighted his legacy as a patriot, intellectual, and visionary. His work continues to inspire efforts to preserve and promote Albanian language and culture.
