EU Report on North Macedonia Triggers Dispute Over Identity Issues

The European Parliament has approved its annual report on North Macedonia’s EU progress, but the process sparked a sharp dispute with Bulgaria over language and identity references.

The initial draft included mentions of the “Macedonian language and identity.” These were later removed through amendments submitted by the European People’s Party, Socialists and Democrats, Renew Europe, and the Greens.

North Macedonia’s Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski condemned the move, accusing Bulgaria of trying to erase his country’s national identity. He called it a fight for justice and historical truth.

In response, Bulgaria urged North Macedonia to meet EU obligations. Bulgarian MP Yordanka Fandakova welcomed the amendments, arguing that identity references had been used for populist purposes. She also called for full recognition of ethnic Bulgarians in North Macedonia’s Constitution.

Despite reaffirming support for Skopje’s EU path, Sofia stressed that further progress depends on concrete reforms and respect for agreements.

The episode reveals deep unresolved tensions between the two countries that may impact North Macedonia’s accession talks.
