On August 7, 1993, Athanas Banushi, the cherished actor of Shkodër’s comedy scene, known to all as Tano Banushi, passed away.

He completed his early education in Shkodër. During the war, he became familiar with leftist ideals while performing in cultural groups close to partisan units. After the liberation, he joined the city’s artistic circles. From there, he rose to become one of the most beloved performers not only in Shkodër but across Albania, especially after his appearances on Albanian National Radio and Television.

Everyone called him simply Tano. Alongside his humor work, he also practiced journalism and played instruments. Still, his voice, more than anything, became a wellspring of joy for listeners of Radio Shkodra.

When Shkodër established its professional theater troupe, Tano became one of its first core members. He worked for years with the Migjeni Theater and retired from there. However, he never stopped creating for the stage or bringing smiles to his city.

In recognition of his lifelong contribution, the Presidium of the People’s Assembly honored him with the title “People’s Artist.” The award praised his creative work and high artistic level on stage, as well as his role in developing Albanian theater. He received this title alongside other icons of Albanian culture, including Avni Mula, Marie Logoreci, Çesk Zadeja, and Kristaq Antoniu.

To this day, the public remembers Tano Banushi with deep affection, for his unforgettable roles and his devotion to the stage.
