Kosovan Assembly Fails Again to Elect Speaker

The ninth legislature of Kosova’s Assembly failed again to elect a Speaker today. Movement Vetëvendosje proposed Hekuran Murati for the position, but MPs from other parties did not support his candidacy.
Of the 115 MPs present, 57 voted in favor, 52 against, and six abstained. This was the 56th attempt to constitute Parliament.
Avni Dehari, chair of the session, said Murati did not receive the required votes and announced that the next session will take place on 24 August at 11:00.
According to the Constitutional Court, MPs must elect the Speaker by open vote, and a candidate can be voted on up to three times.
The Presidency of Kosova emphasized the urgency of forming institutions, citing global and regional challenges. Officials said the swift formation of new institutions is vital for stability, democratic representation, and addressing citizens’ interests.
Prior to the latest ruling, Parliament had failed to constitute itself in 54 attempts.
