Montenegrin Albanians have no reason to assimilate while Albania advances toward EU integration

Faik Nika, Chairman of the National Council of Albanians in Montenegro, stated that Albanians in Montenegro represent 5% of the population. He noted their key role during Montenegro’s independence, emphasizing support for EU integration.
Nika pointed out that political factors in Montenegro sometimes slow euro-Atlantic integration. He highlighted the importance of cooperation with Albanian diplomacy, citing the Embassy of Albania in Montenegro, the opening of the Consulate in Ulqin, and funding of projects supporting the local Albanian community.
He stressed that Albania also supports young Albanians from Montenegro in pursuing education in Tirana and Pristina. Nika suggested easing application procedures and referenced Croatia’s scholarship model.
Regarding cross-border movement, he explained the need to open new customs points and facilitate trade and tourism. He mentioned that the existing Muriqan border crossing exceeds its designed capacity and that a new bridge over the Buna River could improve travel and tourism between the countries.
Nika called for Albania and Kosova’s continued support to address ongoing challenges. He emphasized that Montenegrin Albanians have no reason to assimilate into other ethnic groups while Albania advances toward EU integration. He underlined the importance of preserving Albanian language, culture, and identity.
