Niko Peleshi Elected Speaker, Calls for Unity on EU Path

Niko Peleshi is the new Speaker of the Albanian Parliament. He was elected during the first session of the new legislature. In his first speech, Peleshi called for unity, responsibility, and focus on Albania’s EU future.
He said Albania must close EU negotiations by 2027 and join the Union by 2030. “This is a rare privilege and a major responsibility,” he told lawmakers. Peleshi promised a new standard in how Parliament works. He vowed to protect the Constitution, enforce ethics rules, and ensure MPs are heard.
He thanked his predecessor Elisa Spiropali and pledged full support for justice reform. “Parliament must become a true European institution,” he said. “This is our greatest task in 30 years.”
Peleshi urged MPs to work together, beyond party lines.
“In front of national challenges, we are not majority or opposition. We are sons and daughters of the same Albania,” he said.
He outlined key goals:
- Stronger ties with the EU and U.S.
- Close cooperation with Kosovo and Albanians in the region
- Support for rule of law and democratic values
- Greater control over the executive branch
Peleshi also called for a digital transformation in Parliament. He promised a new structure, new rules, and better tools for MPs.
Over half of the new MPs are entering Parliament for the first time. Peleshi said this signals public demand for a new political culture. He ended his speech with a message of urgency and hope.
“Let’s make this Parliament modern, open, and effective. Let’s deliver a European Albania.”
