The Academy of Sciences announced today the passing of Prof. Dr. Hëna Pasho, one of Albania’s most distinguished linguists. She was born in 1941 in Përmet.

Pasho graduated in Albanian language and literature from the University of Tirana in 1966 with top results. She worked as a teacher and school director in Përmet before joining the Institute of Linguistics and History in 1969. From 1972 until her retirement in 2009, she served at the Institute of Linguistics and Literature at the Academy of Sciences.

She specialized in terminology and terminography, contributing to the preparation of 12 normative terminological dictionaries in economics, law, geography, and anatomy. Her scientific work is widely recognized. In 1988, she attended the INFOTERM Summer School in Vienna, further deepening her expertise.

Even after retirement, Pasho continued her academic engagement. In 2017, the Institute published her collection “Probleme gjuhësore të terminologjisë në gjuhën shqipe.” In recent years, she worked on enriching the electronic corpus for the Great Dictionary of the Albanian Language with terms from finance, economy, and banking.

She also took part in an international project to compile a multilingual library terminology dictionary, serving as a consultant for Albanian terms.

Prof. Pasho collaborated with leading scholars such as Eqrem Çabej, Mahir Domi, and Androkli Kostallari. She was honored with the “Naim Frashëri” Order (Class III) and the Medal for Distinguished State and Social Services.
