Government Dismisses Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj

The “Rama 4” government on September 25 dismissed Erion Veliaj from the post of Mayor of Tirana. Veliaj has been in custody for seven months under SPAK charges, including corruption, money laundering, concealment of assets, and abuse of office.
The decision of the Council of Ministers opens the process for new elections in the capital.
Earlier this week, the Tirana Municipal Council voted for his dismissal, following a proposal by Socialist councilors.
Prime Minister Edi Rama has proposed Ogerta Manastirliu, former minister and political head of the district, as the Socialist candidate for the post.
Veliaj assumed office on July 30, 2015, following the June 21 elections. He remained in the position for three terms until his arrest on February 10, 2025.
He has appealed to the Supreme Court for a lighter security measure.
