34 Years Since Kosova’s Independence Referendum

On 26 September 1991, citizens of Kosova held a referendum on declaring the territory an independent state.
On that day, voters expressed absolute support for independence. This vote confirmed the Independence Declaration and the Constitution of the Republic of Kosova, which had been adopted a year earlier.
The referendum paved the way for the first democratic parliamentary and presidential elections in 1992.
International documents recognize the Kosova Independence Referendum as a landmark act reflecting the political will of the Kosovar people.
